There I was…curled up on the coach with the glow of the TV falling gently on my face…Clutching my bowl of popcorn in suspense. My eyes remained fixated on the athleticism displayed on the screen in front of me, not caring what time it was. Chants of "USA, USA, USA" echoed in my mind as I imagined myself being in the stands, or better yet, being on the court.
Suddenly, I held my breath. Amber Ross tosses to serve toward Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. The ball floats long and out of bounds.
Oh, just thinking about that match – the battle of the Americans – gives me goosebumps. What an incredible Olympic journey!
It wasn't too long ago that we didn't have to look far to watch beach volleyball, but to me, it feels like an eternity. You see, when you live in the Midwest, in the shadow of the Gateway Arch, having opportunities to see professional beach volleyball are few and far between.
Not for long…
The AVP is coming at you on CBS, this summer!! (This would be where I'd insert an OMG, right? Sorry, not this time…I've already thrown too many initials your way.)
Let me back up. The Association of Volleyball Professionals, or the AVP, is finally back on tour this summer after a short hiatus for business reasons. Beach volleyball is back! We don't have to wait until the Summer Olympics in 2016. Plus, CBS made an agreement with the AVP to stream matches online and televise the championship matches live.
It won't be long until Walsh-Jennings, Kessy, Ross, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers are back on our screens showing off their volleyball skills and athletic abilities. Now the trick is waiting until August 16th, when the AVP tour kicks off in Salt Lake City, UT.
Oh, how we've missed you, beach volleyball. Only 3 months to go…
